Kiah Miller: From stay-at-home mum to horticulture advocate
I had been a stay-at-home mum, and it was only when my daughter started kindergarten that I decided to do something for myself and study the Certificate II in Horticulture.
I had always loved being outdoors and working in the garden or my own veggie patch, so this course was perfect for me.
I really enjoyed the Certificate II and was part-way through when a traineeship in the gardens team at Warrnambool City Council was advertised.
This was a great opportunity and has given me a great insight into all aspects of the gardens team including working in the CBD, open spaces, highways, Lake Pertobe, botanic gardens and coastal teams.
I have loved my training at South West TAFE. It’s given me a great intro into horticulture and given me skills that I can take into my workplace including different weed control solutions.
Our teachers each have so much different knowledge to share, and I’ve loved just being outside, learning about the environment.
I love that I can now walk through the bush and identify different plant species.
I now want to continue expanding my knowledge by completing the Diploma of Horticulture in the future.
